Neural Control of Divergence Eye Movements

چکیده
One of the most sophisticated motor systems is the oculomotor system. Viewing objects in depth is supported by vergence eye movements which controls the inward (convergence) and outward (divergence) turning of the eyes. There are two main aims to this study. One compares converging responses (stimuli approaching the subject) to diverging responses (stimuli moving away from the subject) from 6o/s ramp stimuli. Results show that similar to convergence, divergence may be governed by a twocomponent control system consisting of a transient and sustained component. However, the dynamics of divergence shows a dependency on initial stimulus position which is not apparent for convergent responses. Next this research quantified divergence movements stimulated by 10, 6, 4, and 2o/s ramp stimuli. Results show that for fast moving divergent responses, high-velocity components were present lending further evidence that a transient component similar in form and function to that found in convergence also exists for divergence. Responses to slow moving responses exhibit smoother tracking where the dynamics of the movement were more uniform throughout the range of the visual field. This implies that the transient component is more prominent in faster responses thus showing a strong dependency on initial stimulus position whereas with slower moving responses, the transient component did not dominant the movement leading to more homogeneous dynamic responses where a dependency on initial stimulus position was not as apparent.

Convergence and Divergence Exhibit Different Response Characteristics to Symmetric Stimuli
The dynamic characteristics of horizontal convergence and divergence eye movement responses to symmetric stimuli were examined. Binocular eye movements were recorded in five, visually normal adult subjects using the infrared reflection technique for symmetric convergent and divergent blur-free, disparity-only, step stimuli of 2, 4, 8, 12, and 16 deg. The main sequence as well as other temporal ...

Dry dissection, a concept developed by Lawrence Stark, includes a variety of techniques designed to isolate internal neural control components by using cleverly designed stimulus or measurement protocols. As envisioned by Stark, the concept applies only to motor systems that have multiple stimulus inputs and/or response behaviors. A new application of independent component analysis (ICA) can be...
متن کاملVergence Neural Pathways: A Systematic Narrative Literature Review.
Research in the neural pathway for vergence is less understood in comparison to the other four visual eye movements. The aim of this study was to review the literature on vergence neural pathways and associated disorders. A review of previous published literature though to March 2016 was conducted. Intracranial pathologies that affect entire neural functioning were found to cause convergence in...
متن کاملDivergence eye movements are dependent on initial stimulus position
Previous studies on the speed and latency of convergence and divergence eye movements have produced varied, sometimes contradictory, results. Four subjects were studied and tracked 4 degrees disparity step changes for convergence and divergence at different initial target positions. Here we report that the dynamics of divergence movements not only differ from convergence movement, but depend on...
متن کاملApplication of a Novel Neural Approach to 3D Gaze Tracking: Vergence Eye-Movements in Autostereograms
Vergence eye-movements occur not only in real environments, but also in virtual 3D environments. Autostereograms can cover large visual angles without requiring vergence beyond natural parameters and are thus wellsuited for the investigation of vergence movements in virtual 3D images. We developed an anaglyph-based 3D calibration procedure and used a parametrized selforganizing map (PSOM) to ap...
